How you have helped GAFFI so far: I undertook the first –ever estimation of the burden of fungal Infections in Tanzania. This task falls under the commitment of the organization to estimate the global burden of fungal infection and to raise awareness on fungal infections. Our results revealed the highest number of death due to fungal infections among HIV patients with cryptococcal meningitis.
Personal comment on the major needs in Tanzania which GAFFI should be addressing: The high number of death (up to 70% mortality rate) due to cryptococcal meningitis in Tanzania is unacceptable. These deaths are easily preventable by early screening for the infection before the illness is advanced and with the availability of optimal antifungal regimes in referral hospitals. I believe through GAFFI and the help of the Ministry of health in Tanzania, country wide access to the point-of-care CRAG LFA assay can be made to maximize early detection and improve treatment outcomes
